Woodcraft Supply announced Bradley Duckett and his wife, Laura, as grand prize winners in the "Win with NOVA" sweepstakes.

Duckett, a customer at the Knoxville, Tenn., Woodcraft store, and his wife were flown to Stavanger, Norway, where they boarded a cruise with woodturning demonstrations and instruction by well-known woodturners.

“There are no formal woodturning classes. What we did was hook up with one of the demonstrators and work one-on-one with them,” Duckett explained. “I worked with Nick Agar on a really cool textured bowl. He showed me fantastic techniques. It was the first colored bowl I’ve ever done, and I really liked the process. And Nick was very patient with me.”

A software engineer for Scripps Networks, Duckett has been seriously pursuing woodturning in his leisure time for about three years and is a member of the Smokey Mountain Woodturners and East Tennessee Woodworkers clubs.

Avoiding cupping in narrow strips

Q: We assemble the individual narrow strips (we call them staves) into table tops without paying attention to grain orientation. A recent visitor to our facility suggested that we should flip every other piece so that when viewed from the end grain, the rings alternate direction, one with the rings crowning in the middle and the next one reversed so the rings create a valley. This is supposed to prevent cupping of the top, which we do not have anyway. Can you help us figure out if we need to change?

Correct sticker spacing

Q. We are getting a lot of information about the correct spacing of stickers when drying and also the 4x4s. What is the best? We dry mostly oak and cherry, but sometimes do have other species. We do make furniture that needs long, straight pieces, so warp is a concern.
