The Woodworking Machinery Manufacturers Association is accepting nominations for its Patriot Award to honor members for work on legislative and regulatory issues impacting the woodworking industry.
Members may qualify for the award by: hosting a local, state or federal representative at their company's plant; participating in the WMMA Washington, D.C., fly-in event; and by receiving support of the press in the company's community. WMMA offers papers on legislative and regulatory issues impacting the industry on its website to use as tools when meeting with government representatives.
Patriot Award winners will be recognized each year by WMMA at the Woodworking Industry Conference.
Q: We are having a problem with shrinkage. We make furniture, but someone else sells and delivers it. This person claims he did everything correctly, including opening the furniture wrapping (we wrapped the furniture with shrink-wrap and it was fairly well sealed) and letting it acclimate to the house climate. When the customer moved in, they said the furniture looked really wonderful, but within a week, it started to warp, open joints and crack in a few places. We are so careful to keep our plant at 40 percent RH and check the MC of the lumber. This is frustrating! Can you help?

A variety of wood glues are used to assemble the 175 pieces in a six-string guitar. Matching the proper adhesive with the application is important for Taylor Guitars.
Q: We have a gang rip saw that we have trouble with. When the lumber is about halfway through, the piece travels away from the fence. The infeed has rollers that are at an angle so that the lumber is pushed against the fence. That seems to work well for the beginning of the pieces, but then it moves away from the fence. When we increase the feed roll pressure it seems like it might get worse. Any ideas?
