Vollmer of America recently hosted a three-day event at its Carnegie, Penn. location focused on PCD technology. The "PCD Days" event included demonstrations of new machine technology and guest speakers from major PCD suppliers.
Arndt Hauger, PCD product manager, and Alexander Schmid, PCD technician, highlighted some of the latest Vollmer technology, with demonstrations of two fully automated QXD200 machines to explain various machine options and processing PCD drills. In addition to the hands-on machine demonstrations, Hauger presented information on the ability to process drills and end mills using ExLevel software, a 3-D modeling package that allows machine operators or tool designers to create a virtual tool prior to any processing in the machine.
Speakers representing Zoller, Megadiamond, Element Six, Diamond Innovations, American Superabrasives and GM Powertrain discussed other specific items of interest to the 70 attendees. Werner Lueken of Zoller began the presentations discussing current trends that Zoller has seen in measurement requirements at various end users and tool producers, and Matt Collier of Megadiamond followed with a discussion of the V-tec end mill. Other companies discussed new tooling products, along with information on tool processing and PCD tool requirements.
